Northlanders are innovative, connected, and make things happen. So what sort of business do we do?

Northland has a long history of boatbuilding, with it all starting from Maori waka and whaling ships. When the world’s (yes the world’s) largest pleasure catamaran needed a refit, they chose Northland companies to do it for them. We’re poised to become a major player on the global boat-building scene.

Tourism is a key sector of the Northland economy. Tourism is a key sector of the Northland economy. We supply the rest of New Zealand with ALL of its aviation fuel from the nation’s only oil refinery, the NZ Refining Company here at Marsden Point.

Northland produces 20% of New Zealand’s beef and 30% of the avocado crop, although we only have 5% of the country’s land.

The population base of approximately 148,500, is spread through urban and rural communities on a land area of 13,800km2. About 50,000 fulltime employees work for over 17,000 businesses and Northland's annual gross regional product of $4.2 billion (2007) represents about 2.5% of the national total.
