Kauri Museum Autumn Special

Voted Winner – of the Australian Grand Pacific ‘Favourite North Island Attraction 2010/11’ The Kauri Museum is a favourite attraction for Australians. Just like the Huon Pine story of Tasmania, the Kauri pine has an amazing story to tell. A fabulous place of excellence to visit with over 4500 square metres of undercover attraction with lifelike displays telling the history of the mighty Kauri tree. The golden glow of the timber and kauri gum (young amber) make this a stunning place to visit.

The internationally acclaimed Kauri Museum has won numerous awards for showing the story of the industries and cultures linked to giant kauri trees that once covered northern New Zealand. It is one of New Zealand’s foremost theme museums. New Zealand kauri (Agathis australis) is famous for its immense size, its magnificent timber and fascinating kauri gum (the resin that bleeds from the tree that over time becomes a young amber). It is one of the most ancient and largest trees in the world (second in size only to the American redwood - Sequoiadendron giganteum).

The lives of the pioneer timber men and gum diggers are depicted in life-size displays. The many galleries show collections of arts and crafts and colonial furniture skilfully crafted from the beautiful timber as well as a magnificent collection of kauri gum. This Museum offers something for all ages. It is also the centre of excellence for kauri research with an extensive collections archive. There is a Scientist-in-Residence involved in reconstructing past climates using ancient kauri tree rings. New displays are being developed to explain the scientific research which brings a new and exciting dimension.

With over 4500 square metres of undercover exhibition, this Museum gives an insight into what it was like to be in New Zealand in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. A great place to view New Zealand Heritage. The Museum is owned by the local community and is entirely self-funded (not government funded).

The Kauri Museum is open every day from 9.00am until 5.00pm (except Christmas Day). Just off SH12 on the Twin Coast Discovery Highway en route to the huge kauri trees in Waipoua Forest. Apart from the Museum there is a fabulous shop, information Centre and cafe on site, along with accommodation nearby
