northland has produced more than 30 all blacks over the decades.  the exhibition: conversion - grass roots to all blacks takes visitors on a journey with the 1888 nz native rugby team right up to the 2008 northland npc team.

Glenn Taylor and Brian Going with Tane the Taniwha

ever wondered when nz started using the silver fern for its sporting teams?  a velvet cap worn by alexander webster in 1888 (yes - new zealand had a national team in the 1880’s!)has a silver fern on it and we believe it to be the first time a nz sporting team uniform used the silver fern emblem.  bring your kids along and take a photo of them with the northland team mascot - tane the taniwha.  did you know that in the 1950’s, peter jones, all black from northland, was the first person to say “bugger” on national radio - it caused quite an uproar to say such a naughty word for all to hear - crickey - there were children listening!  this exhibition is a great celebration of northland, and indeed national history.  we’ve had visitors from scotland and wales who have been so wrapt with the exhibition we’ve had many long chats about different world cup events.  one of our visitors - a welshman - wrote “lle ardderchog, a pleser i ddarllem am y dyfodol” - can anyone translate this for us?  email
