Mining and Minerals

There is a relatively diverse and successful history of mining in Northland. Currently the industry is dominated by limestone, high quality china clay, aggregate and sand.
Recently an airborne geophysical survey was commissioned by the Ministry of Economic Development (now MBIE), Northland Regional Council, and the Far North District Council. The survey has provided comprehensive data showing significant evidence to support prospective activity, particularly for gold, copper and mercury.
This exploration phase data is a huge asset to the region and sets Northland apart from other regions revealing plenty of untapped potential in this sector. With government and council support and an available labour force, future development is an attractive prospect.
