Farmers' Markets

Northland can claim to have two of the best farmers’ markets in the country – and certainly the first. Other farmers' markets are now emerging in Paparoa and Dargaville, as the West Coast showcases the kai in Kaipara.

In 1997 Whangarei-based tomato grower Murray Burns and Hokianga grower Rob Bradley started the Whangarei Growers’ Market. The concept was to sell direct to the public. Every Saturday morning throngs of people head for the market, which is permanently based at the Water Street Carpark. Most shoppers go between 6.30am and 7.30am although the market is open until 10.30am. Their specialty is fresh, quality produce grown locally.

The Bay of Islands Farmers’ Market, which is held in Kerikeri, every Sunday morning, is a much more leisurely affair. It began in October 2004 and is currently the country’s largest market of its type. As well as fresh regional grown vegetables, it attracts speciality produce and gourmet goods including locally roasted coffee. Subtropical fruit abounds, whether in preserves, jams or jellies.

A tasty treat.

Paparoa Farmers' Market has been in operation since January 2007.  It is held on Saturdays, 9am - noon every fortnight at the Village Green in the centre of Paparoa village.  Since its inception, the market has grown steadily and has maintained a core group of regular stalls with others changing according to the season.  Highlights at Paparoa Farmers' Market are the locally grown seasonal produce, fresh flounder, oysters and smoked mussels, pickles and sauces.  You will also find plants, olive oil, freshly roasted coffee, honey and bacon butties.
