Orira Orchards

Many people queried whether the apples, peaches and apricots for sale at the Bay of Islands Farmers’ Market in Kerikeri were really grown in Northland. It’s one of the main rules of participating at the market.

But sure enough, Orira Orchards, near Umawera, at the top of the Hokianga is a thriving 25-acre orchard with hundreds of fruit trees, which had been owned by the Wooster family for three generations.

The next generation is slowly taking over from John and Marion Wooster. Nicole (30) and Tammy (27) have an extensive vegetable garden and they also cook up a storm in the registered kitchen their parents put on the property, adding value to what they grow. They’re also planting more heritage trees and plants as well as cranberries.
