Diving among the fish, Rainbow Warrior

Divers come from all over the world to dive on the wreck of the Rainbow Warrior.

On July 10 1985, the Greenpeace vessel, “Rainbow Warrior” lay moored at Marsden Wharf, Auckland, New Zealand.  A bomb attached to the hull of the Rainbow Warrior by the French Secret Service exploded. Fernando Pereira, Greenpeace’s campaign photographer was trapped in his cabin and drowned as a second explosion ripped through the hull. Whilst several of the French Agents escaped two were captured and sentenced to ten years for manslaughter.

On December 13 1987, the Rainbow Warrior was laid to rest with full Maori ceremony in the waters of Matauri Bay, Northland, New Zealand.

Now a recreational diver’s site, the  wreck sits upright on a sandy bottom at about 25 meters. This artificial reef is now home to a host of marine life. Jewel coloured anemones cling to the rails in hues of purple, yellow and blue. Crayfish can be found hiding in the wheelhouse and depending on the time of year it is not unusual to find schools of snapper and kingfish hovering about the aft deck.
