Driving & Road Conditions

It's best to allow plenty of time when planning a self drive itinerary around Northland. There are so many interesting little townships and spectacular coastal vistas to visit along the way you will not want to be short on time.

Because of the coastal nature of this region, roads can be windy and sometimes narrow (only one lane) - a condition to which many international drivers are not accustomed. So do not be misled by looking at a map - there are so many contrasts along the way you will frequently want to stop, explore and take pictures.

Driving through native forests.

Expect to be driving through thick dense native forests, tiny townships in rural or coastal settings, then, an hour or two later, on another coastline passing through more established areas such as Whangarei or the Bay of Islands.

This is real New Zealand at its best, so look out for one lane bridges and other quirky features which will have you thinking you have stepped back in time.

A good rule of thumb, if you are from a fast paced city used to speedy highways, is to work out the kilometres/miles and allow at least one third of that travel time again - remember the road trip around Northland is a key part of the experience.
