Twin Coast Discovery Highway

Although there is so much to discover in Northland, planning how to see it couldn't be easier. The Twin Coast Discovery Highway is a circular, touring route that lets you access all the region has to offer by way of a scenic, relaxing drive.

Maitai Bay, Top of the North.

Starting in Auckland, the Highway has options to fit whatever interests you most. From the Heritage Trail (view brochure or map) or NZ Historic Places which will take you to the many museums, historic buildings and significant cultural sites of Northland, to the Wine Trail featuring the region's award-winning wineries.

Drive the Golf Trail (view brochure or map) from one fabulous golf course to the next. And the latest Twin Coast themed route is the Art Trail, guiding you around the unique artistic sites, galleries and studios of Northland. Because it links with all the other touring routes in the region, you can use the Twin Coast Discovery Highway as the basis of your own trail. Just find the places or activities you want to experience and map out your way along the Highway.

Enjoy a round of golf at one of
the stunning courses Northland
has to offer.

There are a whole series of tourist drives off the Highway that can take you on stunning scenic journeys to just about anywhere you want to go. Along the Tutukaka coast; the Old Russell Road via Oakura and Whangaruru Harbour; the road out to Matauri Bay and through to Whangaroa, and from Awanui all the way to Cape Reinga. But don't underestimate the scale of Northland, it stretches far into the subtropical northern waters of the Tasman Sea. Plan your itinerary with enough time to make it an experience, not just a trip.

The driving times in the Getting There section will help you to plan your selfdrive discovery of Northland.
