Waipoua Lodge

Appointed to the highest Five Star standards, this historic and gracious lodge houses the guest lounge, bar, and dining room, and is set within a native landscape, where broad lawns sweep down to a forest walk and birdlife fills the trees.  Remote and tranquil yet under 3 hours by road from Auckland.

You will stay in one of four luxuriously and uniquely appointed suites that are in historic farm buildings adjacent to the lodge overlooking the forest and gardens.  Each suite features a separate lounge, private balcony, kitchenette and a selection of CD’s, DVD’s, magazines, snacks, fruit, toiletries, teas and coffee. www.waipoualodge.co.nz

Dinner Platter in Your Suite

You will be treated to an early dinner platter in the comfort of your suite accompanied by a bottle of fine Northland Pinot Gris.  For the superb food and wine at Waipoua Lodge the chef uses organic vegetables, traditional maori herbs and the finest New Zealand meats and seafoods.  The salads and vegetables are picked fresh from the kitchen garden, or supplied by local growers.

Guided Night Walk – Trounson Kauri Forest

Experience the sights and sounds of the forest at night. A rare opportunity to go on a guided walk to observe our great Kauri Forest.  Weta, glow-worms, Kokapu, kauri snails, eels, Morepork and kiwi are some of the things you may see.

About the Area

Waipoua Lodge is nestled on a ridge overlooking the vast Waipoua Forest, home of the legendary Tane Mahuta - oldest kauri in the world.  Nearby are the crystal clear, freshwater Kai Iwi Lakes edged with pure white sand and the magnificent Ripiro Beach the longest driveable golden sand beach in New Zealand, steeped in history of shipwrecks and gumdiggers.

On Your Journey

Why not stop for dinner on your way up to Waipoua at the award winning Sahara Restaurant, Bar and Lounge in Paparoa on SH12.  (Dinner not included in package). Sahara showcases eclectic and interesting dishes made with local produce from the Kaipara region. 

On your journey home take a break at the wonderful Matakohe Kauri Museum on SH12 where you can experience the awesome history of the kauri, its timber and its gum.  This is a fascinating museum with plenty of working displays and regularly changing exhibits.  Allow a couple of hours.  Entry fee not included in package price.
