It’s gone to the birds…
How does a destination offering luxury accommodation, a tournament standard golf course, an Angus stud farm, and one of Northlands largest plantings of grapes relate to a restored wetland and thriving breeding zone for birds sound ?
A good question that is easily answered by Carrington Farms Manager Ben Haig. Carrington Farms development includes all of these things, and has worked very hard to impact its environment for the positive. The Haig family is committed to maintaining the natural environmentally-sensitive settings which are part of its 3000 acre property, including an extensive restoration of the wetlands area which is being planted with native trees and bushes, and preservation of the extensive beach property. Carrington Farms owns 4 km (2.4 miles) of Karikari Beach , considered one of the most pristine, beautiful beaches in New Zealand . The powdery white sand is highlighted by spectacular dunes, some 50 feet high, and emerald green surf blending into a Caribbean blue ocean.
Carrington Farms is actively involved in programs designed to ecologically preserve the beach and wetlands and to enhance the bird life of both the dune and wetlands area. The restored wetlands area is one of the largest privately owned area of its type and is home to thousands of birds of over 9 species, and Karikari Beach 10 species, with 38 nesting sites identified in 1999 threatened Dotterel. This unique part of northland provides serious bird watchers with a unique locale for observing both land and sea birdlife and the success of the project has seen birds return to the area in droves.
