Tall Ship a Labour of Love

A traditional gaff-rigged schooner, the R Tucker Thompson began as a labour of love by the man of the same name in 1970 as a project to embody the best features of traditional design coupled with the materials of today.

At the death of R Tucker, his son Tod, and Russell Harris picked up the challenge to complete this 18th century replica and finally launched her in 1985. A marvel to see under sail, the ship has gained the respect in the traditional sailing world as a perfect example of a working tall ship, with the added benefit of being new and very much safer than the original counterparts. While ready and able to sail the world at very short notice, the ship spends her southern hemisphere summers in the Bay of Islands sailing for day trips, weddings and youth training, and in the winter tends to head off shore - recently attending Sail Korea 2002 with over 40 tall ships, and winning the prestigious ‘Peace and Friendship’ prize.
