The spine of the dragon

The seven distinctive peaks that mark the Cape Brett peninsula’s dragon-like spine are said to represent the seven waka from the great migration on which Maori sailed from their mythical homeland of Hawaiiki 1000 years ago.

Panoramic views of the stunning Bay of Islands, historical Pa sites, lush Kauri Forest, stunning beaches and private coves - just some of the many features of the Cape Brett Walkway - Northland’s newest walkway that encompasses the seven peaks. Couple that with a boat ride through the 144 islands, and it creates a memorable experience for ‘land lubbers and old salts’ alike. The walk starts at spectacular Te Rawhiti ( Oke Bay ) and takes you over the spine of the dragon through native bush, scenic beauty and vast ocean and island views to the Cape Brett Lighthouse. The magic of the experience could have you believe that the dragon could rise again from the earth and light his fiery breath.
