Far North District
Warm, rural, beaches, ancient forests, opportunity, agriculture, horticulture, tourism, birthplace of a nation…this is some of what makes the Far North what it is.
56,000 people choose to live in the Far North and you’d be hard pressed to get any of them to concede that their lifestyle is not one of the best in the world.

Kerikeri, Opua, Waitangi, Paihia, Kawakawa and Russell make up the Bay of Islands, the world renowned tourist destination and the cultural centre of New Zealand. Waitangi is where New Zealand’s founding document, the Treaty of Waitangi, was signed in 1840, creating a historic partnership between our two peoples, Maori and Pakeha.
Some of New Zealand’s oldest buildings are found and preserved in the Bay of Islands and of course activities, both on and under the water, are part of everyday life. World class gamefishing, diving and fishing are available to all.
Journey’s continue to pause and end at the Port of Opua with yachties arriving from the Northern hemisphere
Far North Communities
Kerikeri is one of New Zealand’s fastest growing towns and a horticultural hub with significant orchard plantings, boutique food production, chocolate to die for and vineyards producing award winning wine.
The settlements of Kaikohe and Kaitaia provide services to the districts agricultural sectors.
Further North you will find the gorgeous coastal and harbour communities - Whangaroa, Doubtless Bay, Houhora, and on the West coast, Omapere and Opononi, two serene settlements at the mouth of the Hokianga Harbour.
Ancient Kauri Forests
Ancestors of the Kauri tree first appeared in the Jurassic period and they remain some of the most ancient trees in our world. They once covered a million hectares in the north. Waipoua Forest is the largest remaining Kauri forest in the world and here you can experience the immense quiet majesty of these trees. The largest (the largest in the world) is Tane Mahuta, named after the Maori God of the Forest and is thought to be around 2,000 years old.
The Absolute Top
Ninety Mile Beach sweeps up (try sweeping down some of the giant sand dunes on body boards!) the West Coast to Cape Reinga, a place of immense cultural and spiritual significance to Maori, where the spirits of the dead depart on their journey to the afterlife. See and experience where two oceans literally meet, the Tasman Sea and the Pacific Ocean.
