Food
We eat well in Northland. Really well.
Northland boasts some magnificent wineries
We have access to fresh high quality food, much of it produced locally. We can choose to eat affordable grass-fed beef and lamb on a daily basis. We shop at our local farmers’ markets for wonderful produce and talk to the men and women that grow these crops for us.
Homegrown
Northlanders’ are also rediscovering the joys of ‘homegrown’, with many digging up a portion of their back garden to provide themselves and their family with fresh fruit and vegetables. With our fabulous sub-tropical climate (and no snow), most gardens will produce all year round.
Hunting and Gathering
Gathering tua tua (shellfish)
There is great joy (and tastes!) to be had in the gathering of seafood (kaimoana) from our bountiful coastline, or catching fish “off the rocks” or from a boat. Our shores and waters are incredibly accessible, with no where in Northland more than 40km from the coast.
The Essential Extras
We have both established and emerging wine producers throughout the region, in fact Northland is the place that grapevines were first planted in New Zealand. Our wine producers are growing in leaps and bounds and producing new award winning wines every year.
We have many small boutique growers and producers of exotic delectables such as saffron, oyster mushrooms, limoncello and organic cheeses and yoghurts.
Let Someone Else do the Cooking
Fine dining, casual dining, pub meals, curry houses, Thai and Chinese, all your big fast food outlets, takeout roast meals, noodles – we’ve got them all. As well as New Zealand’s most famous fish and chip shop at beautiful Mangonui!
Get your Caffeine fix
Northlanders’ can be pretty passionate about their coffee and we have local sellers roasting and mixing beans, and a great selection of cafes in all corners of the region for when you need your caffeine fix. Most cafes also serve really great casual brasserie style food, as well as the kiwi favourite, the meat pie!
