Healthcare

New Zealand has a great health system with government subsidised care, including free public hospital treatment, accident and emergency clinics and subsidies for doctor visits and prescriptions.

Many New Zealanders also have private health insurance to cover costs and avoid waiting times that may occur in the public system.

When an accident happens, the governments Accident Compensation Scheme helps pay for medical costs and loss of income. This system also removes the need to seek redress through courts (we definitely do not have the American model here!).

In Northland, health care services are provided by the Northland District Health Board (NDHB) hospitals in Whangarei, Kaitaia, Bay of Islands and Dargaville. There are also comprehensive community-based services, along with Primary and Community Health Services available.
