Local Communities & People
Everyone who arrives in Northland begins with a journey – a journey of the soul.
The people who first came to these shores were bold, those who decided they wanted something more. More for themselves and more for their loved ones. They didn’t just sit around and talk about it, they did something about it. They were resilient, tough and talented; loving, creative and very entrepreneurial – qualities that are embedded in the Northlander’s of today.
Tangata Whenua
Maori, the first people of New Zealand
Tangata Whenua are our People of the Land – people descended from those first to settle New Zealand. In Northland our tribes or Iwi are; Ngati Wai, Ngapuhi, Ngai Takoto, Te Aupouri, Ngati Kuri, Te Rarawa, Te Roroa, Ngati Whatua.
Pioneers
The people that live in Northland today are descended from those who arrived from all over the world. Some descend from the Maori, the first people of New Zealand, and from those who trace their history back to the bold pioneers of Europe and the United Kingdom. More recently, Polynesians, Indians, South Africans, Asians and others have found their way home to Northland. There’s now around 148,500 of us and most of us simply call ourselves Kiwis.
Welcome
We continue to welcome people home from all over the world, and from other parts of New Zealand. The secret’s getting out – Northland is the place to be.
