Time Out Northland Style
At first glance, Northland might look sleepy and quiet, but scratch the surface and you’ll find a whole lot of living going on.
Galleries across the region showcase stunning works of art and craft

We have fabulous amateur theatre and opera groups, with regular performances for the public. Our libraries provide valuable resources for our communities. In Northland, you’ll find dance sessions for the kids, the cheerleaders and the hip hop crews as well as the ballroom set. There are kite clubs, martial arts groups, photography and jousting (yes, that is on horseback). There’s archery and pistol clubs for those that like to shoot things. Cubs, Scouts, Girl Guides and youth groups to keep our young ‘uns busy, and there’s a multitude of support groups available when you need an ear to listen and a shoulder to lean on.
We’re a community with diverse interests, and if something isn’t immediately available, you’ll probably find that someone will find a way to make it happen.
Good Clean Dirt
Divine regional food in divine locations

With our climate, keen gardeners revel in good, clean dirt all year ‘round – no snow here! In fact many gardeners are able to supply their kitchen with fresh fruit and vegetables all year round – good homegrown, vegetables. And there is a healthy number of garden clubs where many a seed or cutting is swapped with the likeminded.
Beats
If you need a fix of loud beats, dimly lit clubs and all-night dancing – our bigger centres will take care of you. There are many smaller venues – pubs, bars, clubs, restaurants – that showcase both local live music and visiting bands.
We Celebrate
Events happen regularly around the region; art festivals, music festivals, food and wine events, film festivals, fishing competitions, garden festivals, sailing regattas…they are many, they are popular, and they are varied.
Creating Our Own History
Northlander’s have an enviable range of sublime coastline and beaches to choose from

New Zealand is an incredibly young country. We aren’t burdened by centuries of history, we’re fresh and our traditions are still emerging. Northland is the first place that people settled in New Zealand and that, coupled with our widespread population, has given rise to a sense of extended community and solidarity, manifested by traditional events and functions like our many agricultural and pastoral shows (cows, sheep, horses…and tractors for the boys!), weddings and dances at community halls and gatherings at marae (Maori meeting places).
The Beach
All year round, Northlanders rejuvenate their mind, body and soul at the beach. Whether it’s a hot summer’s day or a wild, wild winter’s day when the forces of nature thrill us.
Quite simply, our beaches are the best.
