Far North District

The Far North District has a population of approximately 56,000 people. The district has an area of 732,385 hectares with a coastal boundary of around 2,000 kilometres. The district borders both the Whangarei (East Coast) and Kaipara Districts (West Coast) reaching to Cape Reinga, the very top of the North Island, New Zealand.

The district is home to pristine native forest as well as major plantations of exotic forest. Large tracts of land are dedicated to agriculture and horticulture.

On the East Coast, Opua, Waitangi, Paihia, Russell and Kerikeri all make up part of the Bay of Islands, a world renowned tourist destination and the cultural centre of New Zealand. Waitangi is where New Zealand’s founding document, the Treaty of Waitangi, was signed in 1840. Some of New Zealand’s oldest buildings are found in the Bay of Islands.

Kerikeri is one of New Zealand’s fastest growing towns and a horticultural hub with significant orchard plantings.

Many yachties arriving from the Northern hemisphere make their first contact with New Zealand at the Port of Opua.

Further North you will find sublime communities, coast and harbour - Kaeo, Whangaroa, Doubtless Bay, Houhora,

The settlements of Kaikohe and Kaitaia provide services to the districts agricultural sectors.

Omapere and Opononi are two serene settlements on the West Coast at the mouth of the Hokianga Harbour and neighbouring the outstanding Waipoua forest, home to awe-inspiring Kauri trees.

Ninety Mile Beach sweeps up the West Coast to Cape Reinga a place of immense cultural and spiritual significance to Maori and the very top of the North Island New Zealand.

Two outstanding golf courses can be found in the Far North – Kauri Cliffs Golf Course which has been rated as one of the top 100 golf courses in the world, and the outstanding tournament quality Carrington Golf Course at Karikari peninsula.

New Zealand China Clays, north of Kerikeri, produces the highest quality porcelain and bone china from white primary clay deposits.

Kerikeri is also home to Living Nature, producers of one of the world’s truly natural skincare ranges.

Juken New Zealand's triboard processing plant in Kaitaia produces an extensive range of engineered wood products.

Airports in the settlements of Kaitaia and Kerikeri cater for commercial and charter aircraft.
