primary sector employs close to 20% of the workforce in industries such
as agriculture, horticulture, forestry and fishing. Another 20% are
employed in the manufacturing sector, including woodprocessing and
marine engineering, and construction. Other jobs are to be found in
services such as retail, hospitality, professionals, health, education,
tourism, IT and road transport.
Skills shortages in the region are being addressed by the development of a strategy and action plan aimed at future-proofing the region against skill shortages by building the capacity of the current workforce and providing a flow of trained people into the workforce.
