Northland Inc Bi-monthly

Posted on November 25, 2015

This year has continued to be busy and since our last update we have been hard at work to improve Northland’s economy.

We have continued to develop the Tai Tokerau Northland Economic Action Plan (Action Plan) to take advantage of the opportunities identified in the Regional Growth Study (RGS). The Action Plan is due to be launched in February 2016.

The government announced the Trans Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPPA), which is still to be ratified by Parliament. It is too early to say exactly what impact the TPPA will have on Northland businesses, but early indications are that it is a positive move for the economy. We would hope the in time the elimination of tariffs will give Northland producers better access to markets in countries such as Australia, Brunei Darussalam, Canada, Chile, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, Peru, Singapore, the United States and Vietnam.

I’ve been elected chairman of the national body, the Economic Development Association of New Zealand (EDANZ). I’d like to extend my congratulations to Northland Inc board member and director, Jeroen Jongejans of Dive! Tutukaka, who won the 2015 Tourism Industry Association ‘Tourism Industry Champion’ Award and was also named the Northern Advocate Business Hall of Fame inductee at this year’s Westpac Northland Business Excellence awards.

This edition of the Bi-Monthly, David discusses his views on 'Developing our future workforce'.
