Regional Overview & Safety information
Most walks are freedom walks which due to the region’s temperate climate can be walked all year round, although checking conditions with the locals is advisable.
From coastal pathways to scenic forest tracks you can get close to nature - giant trees, birds and other wildlife.
Right around Northland you'll find a variety of walks to suit all ages, abilities and time factors. For the casual or fitness walker try the 10,000 steps walks around the Northland region.

Walking, trekking or hiking is also known as "tramping" in New Zealand. Following some basic rules of safety will ensure your enjoyment of the region's sights.
Regardless of how easy or well-trodden a track may seem, we recommend that you never go walking alone, or at least - please tell someone where you are going and when you expect to return. You don't have to be climbing a mountain to slip over and break your ankle.
For longer walks always carry drinking water and light refreshments with you. Hike comfortably - a lightweight backpack and sturdy, worn-in boots or shoes are the most important accessories.
The sun is very strong, particularly in summer. We recommended that you cover-up with a hat, shirt and sun-block if you stay in the sun for longer than 15 minutes.
Please check with these organisations for up to date information on the condition of tracks.
