Northland is home to a diverse and quality arts sector with more than 1000 professional artists, many arts promoters and retailers, and over 120 galleries, including artist studios, private galleries and retail outlets. Northland is developing its own unique arts identity, reflective of the history and cultures that have contributed to the region.

Supported


Support is available for creatives through specially designed professional development programmes and business training. A full time and mobile Arts Development Officer provides information, networking and promotional opportunities for practitioners and organisations and meeting s are held regularly throughout the region for networking and development opportunities.

The NorthTec Visual Arts programmes fully support the Northland arts sector with small classes, respected tutors within a challenging environment.

An online directory is available to enabling creatives to display and market their works.

Celebrated


Annual events include the ARtBeat multi-cultural, performing and visual arts festival and TaiTokerau Matariki, which celebrates the Maori New with many events involving traditional workshops, tours, Maori games, art exhibitions, kapa haka performances, traditional kai (food) evenings.

NZ Music Month is celebrated wholeheartedly in Northland with workshops and clinics as well as gigs around the region. Northland music is also showcased annually with the release of a CD compiled of Northland artists.
