Figs, olives, wine, cheese, bacon, paua (abalone), chocolate - Northland's subtropical climate and fertile soils provide an ideal environment for horticulture - the growing of food, and Northland has an abundance of businesses doing exactly this. There is also a growing number of passionate people ‘adding value’ to the raw product with outstanding new products being developed and produced.
Outstanding Beverages
The first grape vines in New Zealand were planted in Northland in 1819 and the region is growing in reputation as award winning wines are now being grown and produced across Northland. Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Vigoniers are all popular as are exciting Syrahs, Pinotages and Chambourcins.
Award winning limoncello is made in the Bay of Islands by artisan producer Lemon-Z.

Successful and vibrant growers markets are held around the region and continue to grow in popularity as people demand, and seek out, outstanding food that is produced locally – fresh, well-priced and minimal food miles!
