Horticulture is a vibrant and growing sector in Northland, from avocado and citrus to orchids and landscaping.

Horticulture is the region’s third largest primary industry sector contributing around $300million to the Northland’s economy. It has more than 1,000 business owners and employs over 2,300 people on a seasonal and fulltime bases. 

The horticulture sector extends beyond crop-growing to include landscaping, amenity, arboriculture and nurseries.

A Climate for Growth


Northland has an abundance of fertile soils and a subtropical climate, which makes horticultural ventures in Northland very attractive for a diverse range of crops and a long growing season.

Not Just Oranges and Lemons

Northland grows 90% of New Zealand’s kumara crop, 30% of avocado and citrus crops and 25% of cymbidium orchids.

Fruit and vegetable production also includes kiwifruit, persimmons, capsicums, courgettes, melons, squash, grapes, olives and flowers.

Boutique crops include blueberries, macadamia nuts, passionfruit, mushrooms and saffron.
