Explore Northland's unique history at Kiwi North. See native species including kiwi, geckos and invertebrates, Taonga Māori from Te Tai Tokerau / Northland, early settler collections at Whangarei Museum, and Heritage Park and beautiful grounds.

Visit Northland's only nocturnal Kiwi House and see the resident kiwi. Learn about native species conservation, including gecko, wētā, stick insects and other invertebrates. Exhibits in the Whangārei Museum include Māori taonga, city development, the natural history of local rivers and forests, relics from early settlers & the 2000-year-old remains of moa discovered in a local cave. Explore the 62-acre Heritage Park where you’ll find the original Clarke Homestead c1886, the unique octagonal Oruaiti Chapel c1859, Riponui Pah School c1898, Jane Mander’s study c1908 and other historic buildings. Enjoy a picnic in the sun or grab an ice cream and cold drink from the friendly staff in the Kiwi North Musuem Shop.
